Knute Buehler — Governor

Knute BuehlerDeschutes County Republican Dr. Knute Buehler was the first to announce his candidacy for the Republican nomination for Oregon Governor and soundly defeated all eight rivals, receiving about 47% of the Republican vote statewide but only 36% in Marion County.

He is a Bend physician/surgeon, focusing on orthopedics and neurosurgery. His clinic, The Center, includes 34 physicians and 180 employees. Twice elected in hard-fought elections to represent House District 54, a strongly Democrat district, Knute has consistently won support from traditionally Republican-leaning business, agriculture, taxpayer and law enforcement organizations but also the trust of the Independent Party of Oregon, Libertarian Party and high-profile Democrats. Beyond politics, he serves on the board of the Oregon State University Foundation, and sits on the board of directors for the Ford Family Foundation, one of the largest charitable organizations in the state. He previously served on the budget committee for the Bend-La Pine School District and the boards of the High Desert Museum, OSU-Cascades Campus and St. Charles Health System.

While most in media and perhaps politics describe him as moderate, there is no other way, when comparing him to either of his opponents, to describe him as anything but the conservative candidate. While his stated positions on a couple of "hot-button" issues irk many conservatives, his legislative record — voting nearly 90% of the time with the House Republican caucus and never considered one who would waver on crucial votes (i.e. would he flip to the Democrats) — shows his strong loyalty to both his fellow Republican legislators and the Oregon Republican Party platform.

"I am grateful and very proud to be a son of Oregon. I grew up in Roseburg and earned my degree at Oregon State while playing baseball. After medical school, my wife Patty and I raised a family, built medical practices and grew businesses in Bend. Serving in the legislature, I have a record of independent leadership and bipartisan results. Oregon needs change. And I'm ready to lead it — with courage, an open mind, a tolerant heart, and a thoughtful voice."
