On 20 May 2014 in a special meeting of the Marion County Commissioners, commissioners Janet Carlson and Sam Brentano selected Rep. Kevin Cameron to fill the vacancy in Position 1 created by the resignation of Patti Milne on 2 April. Rep. Cameron was one of four candidates selected by the Marion County Republican Central Committee at a regularly-scheduled April meeting that morphed into a nominating convention.
Earlier in the year, Rep. Cameron had announced that he would leave the legislature to seek election to the Position 1 seat. Commissioner Milne had filed as the Republican candidate for the Senate District 11 seat currently occupied by Senate President Peter Courtney, who is seeking re-election. She resigned her seat in April so that she could finally devote all of her energies to the campaign.
Both commissioners, while repeatedly iterating that any of the four could have handled the role of commissioner, emphasized Mr. Cameron's proven leadership, especially as House Republican leader during the 2011 session when that chamber was split 30-30. They both also stressed that they wanted someone who would be able to serve as more than just a caretaker. Since Mr. Cameron was the only candidate for election to the office from among the four, he turned out to be the only choice.
