Keizer will be a hotbed of political activity this year due to the retirement of Republican State Senator Larry George (Dist. 13). Fortunately, the strongest of the two State Representatives who serve from his district has decided to step up to keep the seat in Republican hands. Keizer's own State Rep. Kim Thatcher (Dist. 25), after serving five terms in the House, will be a heavy favorite in the race since the two House districts that comprise Dist. 13 are two of the safest Republican districts in the Willamette Valley, if not the state.
Popular local talk-show host Bill Post is the first to declare his bid to become the next representative from Dist. 25. The vacancy, however, should draw quite a bit of interest, especially on the Republican side, simply because it is such a "safe" Republican seat. Even more than a couple of Democrats likely will take a stab at flipping the seat.
This Keizer meet-up will present a great opportunity to fill precinct posts in all of Keizer's nine precincts, as well as precincts north of Keizer in HD 25 up toward St. Paul. Even in these "safe" districts we need to outwork the opposition; we must not take anything for granted.
