Redistricting in 2021 was generous to HD 17. In a vain attempt to make it more competitive for them, Democrats removed almost all of the Linn County portion that had defined the district for three decades. In trade, the district moved into East Salem; Districts 18, 19, 21, and 22 all contributed to its new outline. Still, no Democrat filed to run in the district in 2022 given its still-double-digit Republican registration edge.

Rep. Diehl is proudly "not a lawyer, and [doesn’t] have any political experience." Rather, he is "a businessman, entrepreneur, engineer, and problem solver." He, with partners, built a manufacturing automation company located in Albany. His public service has included Sublimity Knights of Columbus, the Santiam Canyon Wildfire Relief Fund advisory council, the Santiam Hospital Board of Directors, as well as Catholic Community Services Foundation Board of Directors.

His first session will be busy. He has a seat on six committees: Joint Committee on Conduct; Joint Committee on Semiconductors; Ways and Means Subcommittee on Human Services; House Committee on Conduct; House Committee on Economic Development and Small Business; and House Committee on Behavioral Health and Health Care.
