Although completing his first full term in the House representing District 23, Rep. Jim Thompson is not a stranger to the Capitol. He first served in the chamber in 2004 when appointed to complete the term of Rep. Lane Shetterly whom Governor Kulongoski had appointed to run the state's Land Conservation and Development Commission. Because district Republicans chose Brian Boquist in the Republican primary that May, who went on to win the seat in November, his initial experience in the legislature served only to whet his appetite for a return. That opportunity came when, upon the retirement of Sen. Gary George, Rep. Boquist chose to seek election to the Senate in District 12. Rep. Thompson this time gained the nomination and won election to the House for District 23.
The sprawling rural district, which takes in the southern reach of Yamhill County, most of Polk County, and sweeps through Benton and Linn counties into southern Marion County, is perfectly suited to Rep. Thompson. Having earned science degrees from Western Oregon and Oregon State universities, he spent his career in laboratories developing technologies to use local agriculture products in the treatment of asthma and allergies. This experience has made him somewhat a local expert in the House on medical and health care issues.
During the 2009-2010 session Rep. Thompson sat on the House Health Care Committee and the Ways and Means sub-committee on Natural Resources.
For the 2011 session Rep. Thompson will sit on the Energy, Environment and Water Committee, the Health Care Committee, of which he will be Co-Chair, and the Human Services Committee, of which he will be Co-Vice-Chair.
