Established in 1964, the Marion County Board of Commissioners replaced the Marion County Court, which had presided over the county for more than 100 years in this capacity, as the chief administrative and legislative body for the county. The Board is comprised of three members elected at-large, serving four-year terms. Positions 1 and 2 face election the same year while Position 3 faces election alone two years later.

The Board is partisan — the only county elective office that is still so. One consequence is that commissioners must always be elected at the November general election. For any other elective county office, if a candidate receives a majority of the vote at the May election there is no need to face the electorate again. Currently, all three members are Republicans.
