Following two unsuccessful attempts to unseat Rep. Darlene Hooley in Oregon's Congressional District 5, Brian Boquist turned his attention to the Oregon House following the appointment of Rep. Lane Shetterly by Governor Kulongoski to the State Land Development Commission in 2004. In 2008, upon the retirement of Sen Gary George and with the experience of two terms in the House, he ran for, and easily won election to, the Senate for District 12.

Sen. Boquist holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve Special Forces. In 2007 he served a seven-month tour in Iraq as Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff of the Combined Special Operations Task Force. At the end of the tour he was awarded a Bronze Star and recommended for promotion to full Colonel. He has since retired from the military.

In the 2009 session, his first as a State Senator, Sen. Boquist sat on the Environment and Natural Resources and Judiciary committees, the latter as Vice-Chair. For the interim and supplemental 2010 session, he was also Vice-Chair of the Veterans' Affairs Committee.

For the 2011 session, Sen. Boquist received assignments to the General Government and the Consumer and Small Business Protection committees. He was also promoted to Chair of the Veterans' and Military Affairs Committee (Senate President Peter Courtney will sit as Vice-Chair).
