Sometime later this year the Eugene City Council will be asked to reaffirm its previous vote in support of the west Eugene EmX.” So writes Larry Reed, who is the former zoning administrator for the City of Eugene. Mr. Reed now works in the private sector as an urban planner. However his statement is not really true. A City Council vote is not a rubber stamp! The Eugene City Council is not being asked to reaffirm anything. Actually it is being asked to take a new look at the EmX in June with a fresh set of eyes. It is being asked to re-evaluate the EmX in view of recent developments. That is a far cry from the official rubber stamp that Mr. Reed envisions.
About every two years or so in America we have elections again. The two main “gangs” that control just about everything that goes on in our country from the lowly streets to the posh executive boardrooms are called the Republicans and the Democrats. They hold these so called “free and fair” elections all across America, from Bangor, Maine to San Diego, California… and they raise and spend hundreds of millions of dollars just to influence the results of these manipulated and scripted events. By doing so they are trying to persuade millions of undecided voters, especially in the final weeks before Election Day!
Twenty five years ago, Judge Ken Anderson of Williamson County Texas, then District Attorney Ken Anderson was the lead prosecutor in the case of the People of the State of Texas v. Michael Morton , for the murder of his wife Christine Morton. She was raped and bludgeoned to death that morning on her bed. The couple’s three year old son Eric was an eyewitness to the brutal murder of his mother and he told the true story of how it happened to his grandmother. He said that a “monster” had broken into their suburban home and beaten and killed mommy after daddy had left for work that morning.
Last week twelve Secret Service Agents were ordered back home to the United States, from Cartagena, Colombia because they were caught drinking on the job and using the services of Columbian prostitutes when they were supposed to be preparing for the President’s upcoming Summit of the Americas Conference. They were ordered back home to Washington where they were promptly fired, or forced to resign, and made to forfeit their high level security clearances.
I know that Congress can regulate commerce, Justice Kennedy said, but does Congress have the authority to create commerce? The question was directed at Donald Verrilli, the Solicitor General who was defending the Obama Administration’s Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Verrilli was arguing the case in front of the United States Supreme Court. If Congress can actually create commerce where none existed before, and if it can force Americans to engage in a regulated commercial activity even when they do not want to, then Congress has the power to force Americans to be regulated against their own will. Is that your understanding of the Commerce Clause?
Two months ago nearly all of the Republican candidates in the Primary were literally "one-upping" each other to sound tougher on illegal immigration... A border fence, NO amnesty for illegals, NO pathway to citizenship, mandatory use of E-Verify, and tougher sanctions against employers who hire illegals! All of these options were being touted by the candidates. About the only candidate who stood out like a sore thumb was Texas Governor Rick Perry with his soft styled illegal immigration policy of granting in-state college tuition benefits to illegal aliens in Texas. But even that little discontinuity was too much for most Republican voters across the country to bear!
There is a veritable disregard for truth and accuracy in reporting the news, whenever it makes conservatives look good, or when it reflects negatively upon State Government, or if it implicates the darling Democratic “Progressive Establishment.” There is no better example of this than Oregon. Only Democrats in Oregon can be allowed to look good in the eyes of the general public, and reap the public relations rewards for fixing something that is wrong in our State. Only the Democrats of course can be perceived as real reformers who have the public’s best interests at heart. As we all know, the generally enforced stereotype is that Republicans are all supposed to be “evil capitalists”.
There was a lot of pressure put on Rick Santorum to withdraw from the race and to end his Presidential campaign. My guess is that it was both financial and personal. Regardless of what anyone else says, this was not a good day for America. The day that Senator Santorum suspended his campaign was not a good day for the Conservative cause either! He was the last authentic Christian conservative voice in the race. Now the Republican Party has been duped once again by its Progressive Establishment.
Rick Santorum threw in the towel last week and all but ended his surprising, come from behind political campaign for the Republican Presidential nomination in 2012. In so doing he dropped his conservative political challenge to rival frontrunner Mitt Romney, and he essentially handed him the Party’s nomination at Tampa in August on a silver platter. Now that progressives in the Republican Party have their typical, checked pants, country club, big business Republican to lead the Party once again in 2012, they can turn their attention to defeating Obama, the other progressive candidate in the race, and to playing another round of golf at the country club!
A very interesting but not widely covered item in the news last week was from Columbia, South America where twelve members of President Obama’s advance security team were recalled back to the United States for “disciplinary reasons.” Hmmm… Have some members of the Secret Service, the nation’s finest and truest men and women, who are responsible for the President’s own personal safety, and who are supposed to be willing to lay down their lives to protect the President, finally had about enough of him too?
This article was first published in May, 2011. This year Rob Handy and Peter Sorenson are running again for re-election to the Lane County Board of Commissioners from District 4 and District 3 respectively. It is important for the voters of North and South Eugene to remember that they were both found guilty of serious ethical violations of Oregon’s Public Meetings Laws, not by a Republican judge, of which there are not many in Oregon, but by an impartial judge of the State of Oregon. Together Handy and Sorenson cost the residents of Lane County close to $750,000 in attorney’s fees!
