CNBC's Rick Santelli started a new movement with his rant on the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Mr. Santelli said responsible people should not be asked to bail out others who acted irresponsibly. Rick said he would have a tea party on July 4th in protest of the bail outs. You can view a video clip from this link on our web site. Since his statement, there have been tea parties across the nation. On 15 April there were more than 1,000 tea parties. There were at least a dozen in Oregon alone. Salem's party on the Capitol steps attracted well over 3,000 (by some estimates, 4,000-5,000).
Marion County Republicans played a central role by registering close to 2,000 people who attended, registered new voters, distributed signs, and handed out materials that provided information about the several co-sponsors of the event.
Speakers, including legislators and representatives of the sponsoring groups, urged those in attendance to stay involved and stay connected to at least one of the sponsoring groups. Marion County Republicans would like to extend our invitation to connect with us. Join us on the first Wednesday of each month for breakfast at Events at Copper Hill meeting center. Our calendar provides details about each month's meeting. On the third Wednesday evening we host a grassroots planning meeting where we discuss efforts and plans to keep the conservative message of liberty and opportunity in front of people.
Exuberant thanks must go to all the sponsors who worked tirelessly to bring off this event. Although it was under-reported by the primary media outlets Portland TV station KOIN-6 had a truck there and KGW-8 also had a reporter there, but the extent of their coverage was a 30-second spot that evening; the Statesman lowered expectations and low-balled attendance in two brief articles Wednesday and Thursday two local radio stations not only heavily promoted the event, they also broadcast live during it. KYKN-AM1430 pre-empted the first hour of Sean Hannity to broadcast the event while KPJC-AM1220 broadcast during the entire event, conducting interviews with participants and various attendees.
